Hot boating in Pinellas County
This is Pinellas boating, which is very special in Florida (of course the keys), as Pinellas is nearly surrounded by water. Ah, the Gulf of Mexico and the vast waters of Tampa Bay provide a special boaters haven to explore and enjoy. Living in the area for many years, I am not sure we have seen it all! You get the boating options notables: Caladesi Island, Honeymoon Island, Pass-a-Grille, and Egmont Key on the Gulf side. Or spend some time bayside and take in some boating venues like Coffee Pot and Smacks Bayou, great water treasures await in Pinellas County.
Coverage: We are focused on public access, and not private or community use only boat ramps. The goal is to detail ramps that all of us can use and enjoy. Please let us know of any ramps we missed, have questions, or if you have feedback or thoughts to share. Simply just let us know, as we love boat talk!

Pinellas County Ramp Fee
Please be aware that the Pinellas Board of County Commissioners put into affect a five dollar charge or fee for boat ramp use at certain county owned ramps. Actually, the fee is for boat trailers being left in the parking areas, so it really translates directly into boat ramp usage. This government imposed fee was adopted to provide a new revenue stream for Pinellas, with funds used for various county improvements.

Pinellas Boat Ramps Questions or Comments
Please forward any thoughts, opinions, or questions on Pinellas County boating and boat ramps. Just let us know and we will provide any answer we know or can dig up. Any of the items that we deem would be good for our audience may be listed below.
Fort Desoto Campground
Q: We are planning to spend the weekend at the Fort Wilderness Campground. We are going to keep our 16' flats boat in the water all weekend. Any idea of the best spot to park the trailer overnight?
The Hammers, Clearwater Beach Florida
A: You are in luck as the park has thought of that, and created a spot for trailer parking. Guests of the campground actually can park one trailer right at your site! Plus they also have a designated spot just across the street from the check-in office. You can use the Fort Desoto Boat Ramps, and take your pick for parking the trailer. Enjoy the water!
Treasure Island
Q: How is the parking at the 100th Avenue ramp?
Regards, C. J. Johnson (St. Petersburg Florida)
A: I would not like to pass on the bad news, but that location has lousy parking. It is more or less just a launching location for the folks around Treasure Island. Meaning, those Treasure Island homeowners use it to get the boat in and out of the water. Your best bet is a bit to the north, over at War Veterans Memorial Park.
Boating Regulations
Q: Where can I get information and regulations on Florida boating?
Thanks, Judy Bowman (Daytona Beach Shores Florida)
A: Here is the spot for Florida boating.
Bill Jackson
A great place to get your boating supplies is Bill Jackson's, which has it all. I fun place to shop, it is on U.S. 19 in Pinellas County, one mile north of Park Boulevard. It is also just south of 49th Street. They have a nice selection of fish poles, tackle, kayaks, and more.

Boating Safety | VHF radios
Did you know that the Coast Guard monitors Channel 16 on VHF? Yes, and if you need help in an emergency, that is the frequency to use to receive help. Marine assistance services are a big part of boating safety these days, and both Sea Tow and TowBOAT/U.S. do as the Coast Guard does and monitors Channel 16. Just a good VHF safety tip that you really want to be sure to know.

More Boat Ramp Questions
South Sunshine Skyway
Q: Where is there a ramp close to the South Sunshine Skyway fishing pier?
Thanks a bunch, Darryl
A: Hi Darryl, I assume you are asking about the Manatee County side of the Sunshine Skyway. On that side, there is not a good public ramp that we know of, that being northern tip of Manatee County. The Manatee County Bishop Harbor Boat Ramp is for really small boats and kayaks only. The Fort Desoto Park Ramp is probably your best bet, or a little further to the south in Manatee County. If you find out anything different, please let us know.
Hello, we are planning on going to honeymoon island on Saturday and I didn't know which boat ramp to use for the easiest route and time distance. Can we drive jet skis on the beach on honeymoon island? If not, what is the best location for a day with people and jet skis?
Thanks for all your help, Sara
Hello Sara! Super cool is the boating around Honeymoon Island and south to Clearwater Beach. And your are in luck, as you can launch your waverunners right off the Honeymoon Island Beach Causeway. It is a great spot to picnic and enjoy Florida boating.
Have a great boating day!

Obstruction of Access to Boaters
Editorial Comment of Boating Access
There is a major problem with boat access to and from boat ramp and docks at Maximo Park by the Skyway, Phillippe Park in Safety Harbor and War Memorial Park.
People fishing and leaving bait buckets tied to cleats have caused a major problem in these parks. Boats trying to access the docks are confronted with angry fisherman claiming rights to the boat docks, fishing lines have gotten wrapped around the propeller. Also, have even encountered people with little disregard and little intelligence just sitting on launch chairs on the docks, because they said they like it, without getting out of the way of boaters needing dock access and trying to embark or disembark.
I propose a sign with $250.00 penalties for anyone fishing on a boat dock or ramp, tying bait buckets to cleats, or sitting on launch chairs on the docks preventing access.
I propose the City Clearwater, City of St. Petersburg, City of Safety Harbor and Pinellas County Park commission to bring a bill and enact a law with penalties to those individuals that are creating an unsafe condition and through their actions causing property damage to recreational boaters.
Please reply as to when these signs and penalties will be instituted at each boat launching ramp to safeguard boat access, our property safety, against individuals that have no right to obstruct access or destroy the properties of boat owners.
Sincerely, D.M. Lewis
