V-Hull Fiberglass Boats for Garages

Need a boat, but want to keep it in the garage. That was my situation, and I really did not want a jon boat, or any boat that required tiling. Plus, most Florida boaters need to hug the Gulf or Atlantic coastline, and get out to the reefs around the Florida Keys. If you spend much time at all on a boat, you need a small boat that has comfort and can handle a chop. A small v-hull, fiberglass boat, with a swing tongue trailer, is perfect. Garage kept and it lasts and lasts.

To help everyone that may have the same needs, I decided to put one a nice list together for other boaters. Please let us know if you have suggestions or additions to the list. Let's go boating!

Boat Requirements

»V-hull design
»Not greater than 17 feet in length

Sizing the Garage for a Boat

Boat length and width are important considerations, so don't just think about the length overall, LOA. As the width, beam, of the boat and trailer must be known. Take your tape measure with you when you check out boats. I love the swing tongue, as this reduces about 18 to 24 inches from the trailer setup. Thanks for the nice small boat buying guide for the garage kept boat. The boat manufacturers need to get busy building more small fiberglass v-hull boats for the garage.

Max Jones, Cape Coral Florida

Carolina Skiffs

Q: Great site. I have been looking for just what you are describing. I am surprised that the Carolina Skiffs are not shown or am I just missing them. Any info on the swing tongue trailer.

Thanks, Jim J.

A: Hi Jim...Where are you going to be boating? For me, the Carolina Skiffs do not have a strong deadrise style v-hull, which is really needed to handle a nice chop. The boat focus for me requires the ability to huge the coastline, cross passes that can get rough (like Boca Grande Pass or crossing Tampa Bay from St. Petersburg to Anna Maria Island). The Carolina Skiffs have too shallow of a hull design; they state the JV17CC as having a modified shallow v-hull design. The boats are very popular and durable for sure. However, a stronger v-hull, with a larger degree of deadrise really helps around coastal Florida.

And yes, I found some really good information on the zero tolerance swing tongue. I am going to be adding details on that to this article on Fun-Florida-Getaways.com tomorrow. I will let you know as soon as I post it.

Hope that helps, Stuart
