Cruise down the Anclote River out to the Gulf of Mexico on the "Island Wind" boat tour. Or venture out on the St. Nicholas, and witness actual sponge diving. For those who wish to stay behind, Spongeorama is close by and gives visitors the chance to learn the history of the sponge dock area.
The rides are enjoyable. You can take an hour ride out to the open waters for around $10 per person. It's extra nice when there's a breeze in the air. Just remember the time of day, and your sun tolerance, if you choose to sit on the upper decks, which sometimes are not shaded.
