The Pier

the pier
This is known as the Vinoy Basin. The water, boats, and the nature make for a very special setting.

The Pier is a 5-story inverted pyramid building located at the end of a 2,400 feet extension over the water. By far, this is St. Petersburg's most recognized landmark. It hosts several restaurants, shops, an aquarium, and an observation platform. The Pier provides a contemporary setting for dining, entertainment, shopping, and sightseeing. Come try the waterfront dinning, take a boat tour, and even feed the pelicans.

Getting Around Downtown

The best way to explore St. Petersburg is with a car, bike, scooter, or even better, walking. I found it helpful to pickup and use the free Local City Guide and Directional Map. They are great, as they point out all of the locations of all the various attractions and points of interest. You will find these in front of most of the major venues.

The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority provides daily bus service in town and surrounding communities. Phone 727-530-9911 for schedule and fare information.

Activities & Sports

The area is a veritable sports person's paradise! It is ideal for boating, camping, diving, snorkeling, fishing, jet skiing, golfing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, water skiing, swimming, or just sipping a cold beverage in the pool!

If you are a sports enthusiast, you are in luck. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays play baseball at Tropicana Field in downtown St. Petersburg. Across the Bay, you are within 30 minutes of both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers football and Tampa Bay Lightning hockey teams.

Visitor Info

For advance information about The Pier, St. Petersburg, or the beaches, contact the St. Petersburg Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (www.stpete-clearwater.com). A wealth of information is also available from the St. Pete Area Chamber of Commerce (www.stpete.com). Ask for a copy of the chamber's visitor guide, which lists hotels, condominiums, and other accommodations. Also downtown, there are walk-in information centers at The Pier and Florida International Museum.

It is unique, a fun to see and do, plus the views from the pier are wonderful. You can even park at the Pier lots and take the trolley to visit the shops and restaurants.

What a spot for a glass of wine! It is a great dining spot too. I love both Cha Cha Coconuts and the Columbia Restaurant. Food and drinks with a view!

This shot is from a balcony of the Vinoy Hotel. You can see it is a special waterfront setting, just so nice to walk or bike around. Downtown St. Petersburg is part of our Top-10 Florida Sightseeing spots.

This is flat-out just a neat area. As a well traveled Floridian, the Pier and the downtown area are special. Locals know it. Visitors discover it.

The Pier Questions or Comments

The Columbia Restaurant

C: Our family had a birthday party on the pier. It was just perfect, the great harbor views and really nice cuban food. Yes, it is the Columbia Restaurant at the Pier, on the east side of downtown St. Petersburg. We celebrated my Dad's 50th birthday at this forth floor waterfront spot, just enjoying the nice view and the traditional spanish food. A nice spot indeed.

Regards, Alex Gordon (St. Pete Beach)

What to See

The Pier Aquarium is fun for children and is stocked with tropical fish. Being over the water just adds to the element. Most to see is the view of the water and the downtown cityscape. A great family outing. Please note The Pier's ongoing series of weekly events, such as the Sunday afternoon "Music Fest on the Water", as they offer live bands. Yes, live music in St. Petersburg. This event is held at the Waterside Courtyard from 1 to 4 pm. Another option is Salsa Saturdays from 8:30 to midnight.

St. Petersburg Fishing

Oh, the pier is a very nice spot to catch fish. You are far out over the bay, so even medium size sharks can be caught.
